September 2007—Structural Concepts’ new Whisper Cool™ noise-reduction technology for temperature-controlled display cases has been proven in independent lab testing to reduce loudness by 45%.* Whisper Cool technology is available only on Structural Concepts’ display cases having the new Breeze-E™ refrigeration system package. *Based on reduction in loudness (sones, a unit of perceived loudness) through independent testing.

Cases with and without Whisper Cool were tested for average sound power levels (SPL) recorded over 30 seconds. The sound power levels are given in decibels (dB). The results showed that the sound recordings of cases with Whisper Cool were about 8 dB lower than those of cases without Whisper Cool. (As a rough rule of thumb, an increase of 10dB SPL is perceived to be approximately twice as loud.) Then the SPL ratings were converted to sones to determine the loudness reduction.

But the perception of loudness is not the same as the sound pressure level. The human ear perceives high-frequency sound to be more noticeable and annoying than low-frequency sound. Whisper Cool produced fewer decibels at a high frequency than a standard refrigeration system.

Other manufacturers offer a compressor “blanket” to muffle noise, which achieves only a 1- to 3-decibel reduction. Whisper Cool, as noted above, offers a much greater decibel reduction. Breeze-E with Whisper Cool is available on Structural Concepts’ Oasis CO refrigerated air screen models.
